Common tips to minimize the use of computer repair services.

Your laptop computer is indispensable when it comes to getting things done, especially if you work from home. It’s portable, so you can take it wherever you need, even if travelling; it’s versatile, so you can connect it to a dual screen at the office to have multiple applications open at the same time, then pack it up and take it home with you at night; and it has a bigger screen than your phone, which can come in handy particularly when involved with online meetings or when reading/writing content or creating design work.
Therefore, it would be most unfortunate to encounter a problem that would require service of your laptop (or desktop, if you prefer using those), especially if you’re in the middle of a big project and you’re on a tight deadline. Fortunately, there are a few common-sense things you can do to protect your computer from being damaged or knocked out of commission for any period of time. Here are just a few things you should keep in mind when it comes to protection your laptop:
–Malware– There are literally hundreds of thousands of viruses floating around on the web that are just waiting to be downloaded to susceptible computers, usually through some scam email. This malware is sometimes used by thieves to extract personal information from your computer that can be used for the purposes of identity theft, but others can actually attack your data or damage your operating system. So, first of all, do not download anything from an unsolicited email, especially if you do not recognize the source. Scammers sometimes pose as your financial institution or a government agency saying there is a problem with your account or you owe money to the IRS, etc. If you have doubts, do not click on any attachments and go straight to the legitimate source to see if there is anything you need to do. Second, you should always have a reliable antivirus service protecting your computer.
–Food and liquids– Accidents happen. And while you may not anticipate that your cat is going to jump up on the table and knock over the large container of water you have sitting next to your computer, it is a real-world scenario and it happens more frequently than you think. Even if you don’t have a cat, it’s surprising how many people accidentally spill their own drinks on their laptops. The same goes with food. You don’t normally consider that a big gob of mustard or honey will come oozing out of that sandwich you’re eating while working through lunch, but if it gets in your keyboard, it could be extremely messy in more ways than one.
–Placement– You have your laptop on the edge of the table and get up to answer the door. Next thing you know your dog or child goes running by, clips the edge of the laptop, and it goes crashing to the floor. Be thoughtful about potential accidents when setting your computer up for a work session, and keep it secure when not in use. This includes making sure not only that it won’t be knocked off a surface, but also ensuring that nothing could potentially fall on top of it. You might also consider using a protective sheath that will add an extra layer of protection for you.
