Will foldable phones signal the end of the phone repair industry?

February 26, 2020

The short answer is, absolutely not. While foldable phones are becoming more well-known and generating some interest from people who like to try out the latest technology, they are just as susceptible to damage or malfunctioning as current model smartphone. Maybe even more so in some instances. For one thing, having a phone that provides a larger screen from a pocket-sized item means there are more moving parts. If it moves, it will potentially wear down over time and will need service. Here are a few more reasons why foldable phones will still need the phone repair industry.

OLED technology. The organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens used on foldable phones are more delicate than their liquid crystal display (LCD) counterparts. And even though the screens will be protected from direct impact when folded back into the case, they can still crack or even shatter if the phone is dropped or if enough pressure is applied to the phone’s case.

More juice. Bigger phone screens require more battery power. Bigger batteries tend to discharge faster, which means they will need to be recharged more often. All batteries only have a limited cycling life, which means the more frequently the battery is discharged and recharged, the faster it will reach the end of its usable life. Sooner or later the battery may need to be replaced.

Expenses. Foldable phones are expensive, with current prices starting around $1,400 and rising from there. So, if something goes wrong with the phone, owners are going to be less likely to just trade it in for a newer or replacement model. A new generation of repair specialist will be needed to diagnose and fix problems.

If you currently have a foldable phone and it is having issues, or if you plan to get one in the future and any problems arise, our technicians at Cell Phone Zone are knowledgeable about the new technology and up-to-date on what it takes to identify the fault and make them right again. In the meantime, if you have a standard smartphone and it is acting up, we can handle those kinds of problems as well.
