How to change display settings on your Mac

January 18, 2021

Whether you’re just getting started with a new Mac, or you’ve been working with yours for some time and something just doesn’t seem right, you may want to go into your display settings to see if you can make your view more suitable to your liking.

Depending on your machine and the operating system you’re using, the options you have available may differ from the list below. But you can access your display settings by clicking on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen, selecting “System Preferences,” click on “Displays,” then click on “Display.”

Resolution. This allows you to change the detail your display shows. For the best resolution quality for your display, you may want to choose the “Default” option.

– Brightness. This can help you adjust how light or dark your screen is while in use.

– Automatically adjust brightness or Ambient light compensation. If your Mac has ambient light sensing, the display brightness adjusts automatically based on lighting conditions.

– True Tone. Automatically adjusts the colors of the display based on ambient light conditions.

– Rotate or Rotation. If you want to view your monitor in a vertical format versus horizontal, this will allow you to rotate the screen image by the desired amount.

– Refresh Rate. This adjusts how frequently your screen is redrawn. Set too low and your screen may flicker. Set too high and it may go black because it doesn’t support that high of a rate.

– Show displays in menu. This displays an icon in the menu bar that lets you switch between your most frequently used resolutions.

– Overscan. If you’re using a television for a display and you can’t see the menu bar, select this.

– AirPlay Display. You can use AirPlay to wirelessly show what’s on your Mac on another screen.

– Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available. This shows the devices that are available for AirPlay Mirroring in the menu bar.

– Gather Windows. Moves all open Displays preferences windows to the display where the button is located.

– Detect Display. Scans for all displays connected to your Mac.

If you go through these settings and still aren’t satisfied with the output of your display, bring your Mac and display to Cell Phone Zone. We can check to see if there is a problem with your Mac, with the display you’re using, or something else. Then we can quickly address the issue for you.
